Emeralds – Does It Look Like I’m Here? (Daphni Mixes) [JIAOLONG002]
Feted kosmische synthesizer wizards from Cleveland OH, Emeralds, have never had any of their music remixed before. Let alone having the title track from their acclaimed 2010 album reworked (twice) into a floor-filling behemoth by Daphni (aka Dan Snaith aka Caribou). “We toured together in 2010 and since then I’ve always wanted to play their music in my DJ sets. So I did my own version of this track”, says Snaith. “It’s one of those tracks that whenever I play it I can feel the energy in the room lift.” Luckily Emeralds were equally enthusiastic and so this unlikely hybrid see the light of day. …or rather the dark inside of a club.

Tevo Howard – Monument EP [065BUZZ]
Tevo Howard’s second Buzzin’ Fly release after his successful debut The Age of Compassion last year. Three tracks that make up the Monument EP are a near perfect example of Howard’s various strengths as a producer, though “Conditional Love” is an undoubted highlight. The track bumps along with a gloriously quirky quality, its warm analogue groove embellished by an array of delightful percussive and rhythmic touches.

Garben Eden – Tune In Drop Out [ES020]
Hailing from Dusseldorf, Garben Eden hits Anton Zap’s Ethereal Sounds imprint with three fresh, exciting and interesting house tracks. The percussion in “Tune In Drop Out” ticks delicately, paving the way for sweeping, funk-tipped pads that blanket the entire beat. The bass line walks its way through shimmering pads, heavenly voices plotting a path amongst staccato congas that flow directly into your head. “B With U” moves you with a stuttering and chaotic composition. Garben works the madness amongst itself, using the breaks to give us shining glimpses of funk-tinged electronic music. “Meer Davon” ends the EP with a dark, undulating beat punctuated by a sporadic but prominent synth line, inducing its listener into a state of deep hypnosis.
Trus’me – Remixes [PN012]
Prime Numbers returns with a series of remixes of Trus’me favourites, including treatments from a host of current cherished producers. The 12 features the MDR records duo Marcel Dettmann & Norman Nodge. Dettmann takes a diversion from his more familiar techno blueprint, working ”Sweetmother” into a tight house groove. Intensifying all parts of the original he creates an insistent and deeply pressured production. On the flip ”Good God” gets dubbed & smudged into a beguiling ghostly haze. Nodge completely reworks the mix stripping back & filtering the elements to fantastic effect.
Skudge / San Proper – Dekmantel Anniversary Series Part 4 [DKMNTLAS5.4]
Dekmantel’s 5th Anniversary Series has so far been as finely curated and presented as you’d expect from the Dutch label, and this penultimate entry is no different with Skudge and San Proper introducing some dark techno business to proceedings. Swedish duo Skudge are on fine form with “Silent Running” delivering one of their subtly melodic productions that revolves grainily around one repeated and tweaked refrain. Given San Proper’s dedication to the label (he sports a Dekmantel tattoo after all) it’s little surprise the hirsute Amsterdam icon was asked to contribute and “Rattle (Station 2 Station)” is one of the best tracks on the series so far. A grinding, industrial beat mixes with dense vocals, synths, speech samples and plenty more. The end result is a perfect example of the kind of steamy, sweaty haze of late night damage that Mr Proper has made his own.

Mi Ami – Decade [SILK020]
Mi Ami is the five year old project of exotic punk-gone-House types Daniel Martin-McCormick (Ital) and Damon Palermo (Magic Touch). ‘Decade’ signifies a suitably decadent sea-change to their sound in keeping with respective solo projects. Basically they’ve ditched the guitars and drums for a hypnotic, electronic blend of Deep House and Disco filtered through their sly post-punk sensibilities, stretching their svelte, club-and-gig-toned laptop muscle over four extended groovers aimed squarely at the more misty, pie-eyed ends of the night. On ‘Horns’ Daniel’s snotty no-wave vox jar very nicely against cocoa-buttered Chicago simulations, while the luscious ‘Time Of Love’ coolly sidesteps their punk roots with smoothly tucked-in disco bass and a sense of debonaire, balearic Dub romance. Deeper yet, ‘Free Of life’ meditates on rippling congas and hyperreal reverbs looking for that Panorama Bar booking while ‘Bells’ sounds something like a long lost Virgo dub starring a cameo vocal from Zed off of the Police Academy films.

Gerry Read – Yeh Come Dance [DSRH001]
Delsin launches of a new house-focussed series and the first release is from the mysterious and 19 year old Gerry Read.
“Yeh Come Dance” explores dusty and rusty loops of drums, vocals and wooden hits all of which are held together with a knackered jazzy glue. ‘Crawlspace’ on the other hand is a foggy gaggle of kicks, drums, hi-hats and cowbells coated in plenty of hiss and crackle. ‘Bozza’ again demonstrates Read’s ability to produce something that sounds two decades old yet wholly contemporary at the same time. Chord prods here, raw hits there, jazzy motifs buried within – it’s house music designed for cosy little basements in the dead of night where ‘Crooked’ is more in yer face. The loops in this one are more exposed and loud in the mix, but still feel unmistakably elliptical and raw.
