On his new album for Artificial Dance, Tsampikos Fronas aka June takes a departure from his dance orientated earlier work. Recorded between 2018 and 2020, Window of Time sees the Berlin-based producer explore sparser arrangements than his previous releases. The record unravels like a dystopian cyberpunk novel, something akin to William Gibson’s Neuromancer. Both the title track and ‘Stratagem / Predator’ create an increasing tension that builds through repetitive sequences. The arpeggiated synths on ‘Year 2092’ evoke images of sprawling metropolitan city scapes, while the claustrophobic mood of ‘The Master of Electricity’, the first track written for the album, wouldn’t go amiss on a soundtrack to a sci-fi thriller like Blade Runner. Created using modular synthesizers, analog sequencers and analog polyphonic synths, Window of Time eschews melody in favour of cold, pulsating rhythms. Combined with haunting choral toplines and minimalistic flourishes, such as those on album closer ‘Elegy’, June invites the listener on a free dive into their subconscious; to navigate boundless, unexplored territories.

Oráculo Records presents “This Modern Slave” by Lola Kumtus from Finland. This is extracted from 2017 “The Leftovers Tape” and 2016 “Mirror Use” cassette recorded in Helsinki.

Following the warm reception afforded to their 2020 compilation album ‘Crossed Wires’, which exhumed unreleased music from the depths of an archive belonging to an unnamed producer, Light Sounds Dark presents ‘Crossed Wires II’. Responsible for clueing us up to more oddities than you can name, LSD are on their classic game here, cueing up 15 top shelf obscurities from the intersection of industrial, electro and no wave mutant disco. Another rewarding grab-bag of strange, experimental productions.

For his debut album on Dekmantel, Interstellar Funk has crafted a raw, yet simultaneously hauntingly beautiful and endlessly intricate record. Layers of blended harmonies and melodies form the basis for jettisons into leftfield experimentation, heavily processed drums and oscillating frequencies. The result is as infectious as it is pensive; a transcendental journey into a synth-laden landscape. “Into the Echo” is daringly eclectic, combining sung-spoken iterations with hypnotic samples and machinic industrial.

This is Lost Soul Enterprises’ 15th release on wax, a tidy compilation of off-kilter dance floor cuts and misfit synthpunk anthems. Side A commences with the gothic, neon-soaked Miami bass of Alonzo’s “Cruising with Pap,” featuring sinister verses delivered by a shadowy syrup-sipping secret guest vocalist. Up next is bucking bronco Nick Klein’s slow-mo industrial headbanger “Posture Test.” Lastly, wild synth lines and ethereal dubbed-out samples dart in and out over a tough, punchy rhythmic foundation in Naeem’s “TLX,” an android’s sci-fi electro vision gone haywire. On the B side, Heidi Sabertooth’s “Was It You” launches us deep into chugging acidic territory, combining enigmatic spoken vocals and a psychedelic, slowly evolving SH-101 line over a persuasive groove. Next comes raucous synth-punk powerhouse SSPS with “Paradise Lozt,” raw as fuck, chanting a litany of dystopian tales atop pumping drums and a wash of demented organ-like synth stabs. Finally the release closes with the short but powerful “New Vape City” by the nomadic Douce Angoisse – an absolute earworm, a doleful coldwave ballad whose lush production plays perfect counterpoint to the icy, deadpan sentiments within.

Boris Barksdale’s first full length on Natural Sciences is the final joyride of the human mind. Over two sides of screwed proto-beat, street electronics and twisted metal ambiance, “Mind Over Matter” picks apart the medias domination of the world we live in, drawing on internet advertising campaigns and social commentary to show you how messed up things have really become. The record builds on from Boris’ inclusion in Natural Sciences’ Future Works & Age in Decline compilation series.

Russian producers Namesis and Sunko, show us their origins with this album. Where we can find a very marked roots between synthwave, Ebm and coldwave. Voices that make you shudder from the depths of your being. It also has three remixes that perfectly capture the matrix to take it to the next level, each remixer in the field that feels more comfortable. “On the Knees” is an album full of power, strength and grit.

Valley of Tears reach the end of the saga with this double vinyl full of collabs or bands to offer the maximum exponence of the saga. Curated on gatefold sleeve mixing the art design of Greta Haga with all the power of the music.

Los Angeles’ Silent Servant returns to the fold with his first solo offering since his 2018 ”Shadows of Death and Desire” LP for Hospital Productions. Mendez wastes no time on the opener ”Cyber Luminescence” featuring Cabaret Voltaire’s Stephen Mallinder on vocals, with a modern take on classic synthwave displaying a heavier production style, with fluttering kr-55 hi-hats, synthesized snares, and a chaotic punk energy. This is not without melody and catchiness, as Mallinder drives the track full on; masterfully singing about a dystopian future which we very well may be living in at this moment. “Raw Optics” is Silent Servant in true form layering an atmospheric backdrop over driving raw sequences and vicious drum programming. “Solitude Illuminated” is the real centerpiece of the record though, as Mendez goes into a new territory finding a balance between uplifting slow house music and his signature shadowy techno. Where his classic “Lust Abandon” was more Distant Dreams pt. II, “Solitude Illuminated” is more akin to something like Dearborn’s house classic “New Dimension” but taking a fresh production approach on this bassline driven seven minute anthem.

Acclaimed saxophonist, producer and composer Yasuaki Shimizu will release Kiren, his unreleased album from 1984, on the Palto Flats record label. Kiren is Yasuaki Shimizu’s work for experimental dance music. Employing cutting edge production to create lush new wave soundscapes, it bridges the gap between his early 80s recordings and his later work with the Saxophonettes, filling a key lost chapter in his discography. By the early 1980s Yasuaki Shimizu had established himself on the Japanese new wave scene, producing many important experimental pop records and releasing several albums as the bandleader of Mariah. Following the release of his widely regarded solo classic Kakashi, from 1982, and the otherworldly Utakata No Hibi, by Mariah in 1983, he went into the studio the following year with frequent collaborators, producer Aki Ikuta and Morio Watanabe (bassist of Mariah), to record a mystifying collection of experimental dance music. Utilizing cutting-edge technology and studio trickery, Kiren showcases Shimizu’s trademark playfulness, marrying richly layered production techniques to off-kilter, sometimes traditional sounding rhythms and melodies. Portending his work with the Saxophonettes as well as forecasting trends in techno, new wave, and futuristic rhythmic music, this formerly lost album represents an important period of Shimizu’s artistic expression, an artist at his peak, while successfully exploring the intersections of fusion, synthpop, new wave, and jazz.
