Top Romanian Producers of 2016
In the last years more and more Romanian artists are making their voice heard across the electronic music palette.

Romania is well known for the minimal/micro-house/Romanian-techno and tech-house music, but now we have artist that experiment and dive into other sounds, the kind of sounds we love at the Hipodrome of Music.

Cosmin TRG – In Your Body, Kapotasana [SPORTIV001]

Relax your eyelids Focus on the darkness This is your time to relax You don’t need to think about anything Except being right here, right in this moment With me. Don’t think about tomorrow, or yesterday, Just be here In your body. Sportiv is a dexterous white label operation that brings you heavy-weight rhythmic performances from the world of techno athletics.
Population One – Temporary Insanity + Remixes [OUT018/OUT022]

‘Temporary Insanity Remixes’ is a 12” featuring the redefinitions of the two original productions of Detroit veteran Terrence Dixon, turned upside down by three of the most groundbreaking electronic music artists as Voiski, Pangaea and Cosmin TRG, appearing alongside label head Simone Gatto. OUT022 operates as a modern take of old school sounds, an hybrid union of all melodic techno sub forms – these remixes keep the mental locked groove material of Dixon’s tracks, adding emotionally irradiating patterns and each producer’s typical paths.

Cosmin TRG – III EP [FIZIC003]

Cosmin TRG’s Fizic label release its third EP, and a second missive for 2015. Once again it comes from the Romanian label owner and ever evolving producer, and this time features four more fierce cuts that take abstract inspiration from musique concrete or Ballard’s High Rise novel. Opener ‘Sever’ is an expertly stripped back bit of concrete basement funk with scurrying alien sounds, frosted lo-fi textures and firmly rooted, propulsive kick drums driving the whole thing along. It’s an absorbing affair full of distant menace, and then comes ‘Redus’, a hunched over, forceful dub track again riddled with abstract lifeforms, distorted radio frequencies and muffled sirens that all bristle and brim with sonic debris. ‘Sirena’ is once more built upon thudding, firm kicks but here synths howl and spray about like a UFO in a storm, a harmonic hook rocks back and forth and modulated lines add life and depth to the burrowing groove. Lastly, ‘Motoric’ goes arctic, with cavernous chambers of sound full of echo and reverb as kicks thump out a groove. It’s a fourth and final bit of physical music informed by the musical and visual noir undertones of Under the Skin, cementing a robust alliance between form and function. Music and artwork by Cosmin Nicolae Mastered by Matt Colton.
19.94 / Cosmin TRG – Narr Day [50WEAPONS040]

50Weapons begins its finale with the first of 11 12″s, catalog numbers 40 through 50, featuring a 50Weapons artist on one side and another artist, chosen by the first, on the B-side. “Narr Day” is the first tune ever made by one of Berlin’s key electronic acts; all the flavors of the early days are combined in this minimal ambient techno tune made of the three main ingredients: a bass, a drone, and a kick drum. Cosmin TRG uses the dark drone of “Narr Day” as the base for his modular-synthesizer-enhanced rework of the track. Dark and trippy techno for the head.

Cosmin Trg – Uzura / Vitriol [FIZIC002]

Following almost a year of studio silence, Cosmin TRG returns with two stunning techno tracks.”Uzura” is the darkest, most abrasive music that the Romanian producer has released. Drums pound frenetically, the rhythm is plunged down a soot-caked wind tunnel and the end result is a track so frenetic and extreme that it makes everything else he has done seem understated. Even “Vitriol” doesn’t have the same clout. Like “Uzura”, it too is caked in a grimy coat, but is slower and more teased. That said, the gurgling acid lines and intense, modulating climaxes ensure that it is Cosmin Nicolae’s most visceral record to date.
Cosmin TRG – Repetitiv / Vernacular [FIZIC001]

‘Fizic’ is the next natural step for accomplished techno producer Cosmin TRG. Having released on an influential array of labels in the last few years, the Romanian is now branching out on his own with an imprint that will serve as a further extension of himself, his sonic preferences and his interest in artistic imagery. Releasing esoteric techno aimed largely at the dancefloor and purely from his own studio, Fizic releases will come accompanied with Cosmin’s own photography as well as occasional videos. Coming in both vinyl and digital format, the label serves as a combination of a need for a more personal, dedicated approach, a desire for artistic freedom and is born from ‘a slightly egocentric tendency, with the sole purpose of creating unique, high quality audio-visual products.

Simian Mobile Disco & Cosmin TRG – Surströmming [DELI011]

Following that excellent Bicep collaboration, Simian Mobile Disco join forces with Cosmin TRG for the latest release on their Delicacies label. On paper the two parties make logical collaborators thanks to their love of minimal textures and subtle melody, and in execution the results are a resounding success; “Surstromming” sees those rubbery acidic basslines SMD are famous for take a pulsating approach, throbbing its way through subtle dub chords and a robust 4/4 rhythm. “Sannakji” meanwhile is a considerably trippier affair, combining a taut arpeggio with well placed moments of ecstatic chord release. Two tracks sure to cause maximum warehouse devastation!
