F. Mavelli – Special Brigade [B4003]

The Special Brigade – one of Legowelt’s best fictitious classic-italian-late-’70’s-police-horror-cult-movie electronic techno music soundscape. Florenza Mavelli’s Special Brigade soundtrack (aka Uomini Brigata Specialle) an obscure italian tv-series tells the story of an elite special government police unit formed to counter terrorism and organized crime. It first surfaced on the legendary CBS blog late 2007, only to fade into obscurity again after the old CBS’s foreclosure. In 2009 it was remastered from vintage reel to reel tape and released on Danny’s Strange Life label on a CD album. Now Bunker brings it back! It’s great to taste six of those dramatic cuts on vinyl finally.

House of Jezebel – Back In Dogtown USA [VD16]

Voyage Direct label turns to a man who needs little introduction: Dutch legend and man of many pseudonyms Danny Wolfers aka Legowelt. For this first outing on Voyage Direct, Wolfers resurrects the House of Jezebel alias and delivers two tracks of synth-laden analogue house goodness. “Back In Dogtown USA” sets the tone, as Wolfers layers rising chords, darting electronics and wide-eyed synthesizer melodies over a clattering analogue house groove. Wolfers’ ups the tempo dramatically on “I Took A Train In 1979”, transplanting us to the far reaches of our galaxy via jackin’ techno drums, picturesque organ melodies, drifting chords and intoxicating pads. There are echoes of classic Detroit techno, surging Rotterdam electro and vintage cosmic disco, yet it doesn’t really sound like any of these things.

youAND:THEMACHINES – Behind Reshaped [ORN029LTDW]

YOUAND THEMACHINES - Behind Reshaped

youAND:THEMACHINES is the solo moniker of Martin Müller, one half of the Berlin based luminaries youANDme. A year after the release of his ‘Behind’ LP youAND:THEMACHINES presents ‘Behind’ LP Reshaped – an opulent collection of selected edits, interpretations and remixes courtesy of a prestigious roster of distinguished producers including Matthew Herbert, Steve Bug, XDB, Boo Williams, Sascha Dive, Legowelt, Marko Fürstenberg & Luke Hess and Basic Soul Unit amongst many more. ‘Behind Reshaped’ mines deep beneath the original’s surface and is a varied compound of textures, tones and atmospheres. From Steve Bug’s glacial ‘Raw and Reduced’ edit of ‘Drift’ to The Analog Roland Orchestra’s allaying take on ‘Desire’ and from XDB’s armoured and clap-heavy remix of Perception to Freund der Familie’s lucidly textural version of ‘Entrance Room’ the listener is ferried through a broad spectrum of feeling whilst a spectral and rueful current remains consistent.

Chaos In The CBD – DeLorean Dreams EP [HOTSHIT007]

Chaos In The CBD drop down on Hot Haus Recs In Effekt with 2 outsider house bangers backed with a Legowelt remix. Having released records on Clek Clek Boom to much fanfare the New Zealand brothers have honed a more analogue houz sound for their Hot Haus 12 keeping with Unknown To The Unknown spirit of “offf the wall bangers”.

Legowelt – Crystal Cult 2080 [CRCD010]

https://i0.wp.com/imagescdn.juno.co.uk/300/CS517346-01A-MED.jpg

New album by the irrepressible Dutchman… The ‘2080’ part of the album title is taken from the Roland JV2080, a legendary digital synthesizer from the nineties that was used a lot in the making of the album. Bought second-hand in Tokyo for a couple of hundred dollars, it lends the record a very dewy eyed soul, whilst the ‘Crystal’ part of the title stands for the self-made ‘DIY germanium crystal compressor’ Legowelt used throughout the writing process. The album itself features ten new tracks of pure Legowelt music mainly recorded in De Hague in the past year, but also on the road during tours of LA, the Californian desert, Tokyo (which spawned ‘Crystal Cult 2080’) and Tejada Gran Canaria (where ‘The Future of Myself’ was written.) Where his last album The Paranormal Soul was an organic trip into misty forests, this one seems more concerned with medieval spirits; it’s deeper, darker and the whole thing is tied together by a more coherent sense of ancient alchemy. Given the use of a DIY germanium crystal compressor during production, it’s no wonder everything feels warm, fuzzy and mystic in a way that draws your attention in like that fabled philosopher’s stone… glare too long and you might just turn to stone. Right from the opening track the mood is so encapsulating you are drawn right into Danny Wolfers’ mysterious electronic world. From there various different tempos are explored and plenty of famed synthesiser work comes to the fore, wrapping grooves in trippy themes, impish spirits and plenty of organic lushness.

Legowelt – Blue Tearz [RVRT001]

Continuing the feeling that a new Legowelt record is seemingly announced or released on a weekly basis, the Dutch producer adds another label to his faintly daunting discography by inaugurating the Spanish label Riverette. Aside from a sparse website and hollow Soundcloud account, little is known about this low-key Madrid label, but it’s easy to focus on the music here as the Blue Tearz 12″ offers a snapshot of Legowelt’s production diversity. The title track grips all available space on the A Side and offers a perfect display of Wolfers’ talent for wrenching melodic beauty out of his equipment, whilst “I Shadow Wolf III” – which must be a reference to his recently unveiled Shadow wulf CyBeRpUnK E-ZiNe – is reminiscent of Psyche-era Carl Craig. “Source Of Menace” meanwhile is vintage Legowelt.

Deathday – No Future [MNQ046]

Deathday (formerly Deathday Party) is a Los Angeles based Experimental Post-punk band, formed in Santa Ana, California in 2008 by brothers Alex Guilln and Giovanni Guilln. While the title-track is an unreleased one, instead ”Dropped Into Obscurity” was already included in the Downwards compilation ”Click Heels” alongside with Tropic Of Cancer, Silent Servant, The KVB. On the B side Mannequin asked to the synth-master Legowelt to remix “After Dark”. Seldom has the post-punk revival seemed as urgent as with Deathday, who match their guitar driven dirges with esoteric industrial soundscapes and tape manipulation. Their music is often as bleak as it is violent, with low end cacophony bludgeoning the listener into submission. Lyrically, Deathday often invoke the violent culture hidden beneath the media, as well as explore the crippling aftershocks of isolation and the mysticism of the occult.
