Abstract Division – Metropolis [DREF025]

ABSTRACT DIVISION - Metropolis EP

To Abstract Division, the city of Detroit and its artists are a major source of inspiration. As such, they decided their newest Metropolis EP was to be a homage, a means of giving back. This special package includes an original track that keeps close to the spirit of melodic, rhythmic, minimalism Detroit is known for. It also features three very special remixes by close friends Oscar Mulero – under his Trolley Route alias – Function, who ups the darker ante and Marcel Fengler who infuses it with his trademark Berlin funk.

Function – Synewave Reissues Part 1: 1995-97 [INF016]

Back when Dave Sumner relaunched his dormant Infrastructure New York label at the start of the year, vague allusions to some sort of planned retrospective were made as a means to tantalise and excite. With the label now fully up and running thanks to a series of great techno 12″s from Function, Campbell Irvine, Inland and a select reissue or two, it seems those plans for a retrospective are a lot firmer. Synewave Reissues Part I: 1995-97 is the first of two 12″s that will precede the release of the 28 track Recompiled: Various Works & Pseudonyms, 1995-2012 compilation in 2015 and draws from material Sumner committed to Damon Wild’s Synewave label. Both “F3” and “F4” are some of the earliest productions Sumner committed to tape as Function and are complemented by a new edit of “Shift F1” from his Infrastructure pardner Inland.

Function / Vatican Shadow – Games Have Rules [HOS425]

Here’s something to excite those of an experimental techno bent: a collaborative set from veteran producer Function and drone/industrial sort Vatican Shadow. Given the qualities’ of both producers, it’s perhaps unsurprising that Games Have Rules is rather good. Like any good collaboration, it tempers the more outlandish aspects of each producer’s work, delivering a set bristling with icy textures, bittersweet ambience, dreamy atmospherics and, perhaps most pleasing of all, sprawling techno (see the brilliant “Bejewelled Body”). Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the crystalline mood of “A Year Has Passed” (reminiscent of Selected Ambient Works era Aphex Twin) to the murky textures and spooky electronics of “The Nemesis Flower”.

Hipodrome’s 2013 Review (Part 3 of 3)

Here is the third and final part of my 2013 review, featuring my favorite albums released last year. In the first part of the review, the preferences of hipodrome followers are shown, according to the number of click and stars. In the second part, I presented some of my favorite events and performances from last year.

Now here it comes the serious business. Because there are so many good albums and different genders, I took the same approach as in the 2012’s review.

The list is covering all the genders that I like and post on The Hipodrome Of Music, so I came up with no more than 20 gender lists, going from house to techno, disco and funk to electro and new wave …

Here we go.

L.B. Dub Corp – Unknown Origin [OSTGUTTONCD029]

https://imagescdn.juno.co.uk/300/CS509441-01A-MED.jpg

Ostgut Ton presents ‘Unknown Origin’ the debut album from Luke Slater’s L.B. Dub Corp moniker. The ten tracks recorded at Spacestation Ø form a hymnal intent on transporting you back to the roots. Digging deep into the history of dance music, ‘Unknown Origin’ dares to ask the big questions and offers noeasy answers. Instead, deep spiritual dubs are side- by-side with slices of piano house, and handsome slabs of techno contrast with the words of the silver-tongued poet Benjamin Zephaniah.

Sandwell District – Fabric 69 [FABRIC137]

https://imagescdn.juno.co.uk/300/CS485058-01A-MED.jpg

Over the course of ten active years, Sandwell District were responsible for disarming and destabilizing the structures that gagged free-form expression, drawing upon tenets of DIY-post-punk culture to disrupt accepted ideas of exactly what it meant to be an artist, label, DJ or producer. During this time, the collective’s core members, Function (Dave Sumner) and Regis (Karl O’Connor) (along with label partner, Silent Servant), played a key role in broadening the link between early electronic, post-punk, and noise; an influence which continues to resonate in the burgeoning, and shape-shifting, modern-day techno scene. With this mix, another genuine artefact has been added to the Sandwell legacy, a document of their skewed presence and existence, a treasure guaranteeing the kind of quality that electronic music compilations rarely achieve. In 1 hour 15 minutes, the pairing of Regis and Function succeed in presenting and executing some of the most potent flourishes in the Sandwell catalogue, distilling them into a coherent body of work that masterfully defines the current techno zeitgeist. Few contemporary producers have bettered the merciless techno blueprint laid down by this collective, and few ever will.

Pigon – Kamm Interpretations [LILA001]

Lirum Larum is a brand new joint of Pigon aka Efdemin and RNDM. Always riding the thin line between house and techno with a twist for the obscure they decided to have their own imprint from now on. The 1st release features a composition of their own in two mindblowing interpreations. Function and Tobias provide their interpretations of pigon’s track “Kamm” (originally released on beatstreet in 2008).
