Dez Andres – Culture Shock [AUDI004]

ANDRES, Dez/VARIOUS - Culture Shock

Although he started his career back in the early 2000s and has links with Moodymann’s Mahogani Music label, Andres’ profile has increased of late thanks to a string of brilliant EPs for M1 Sessions and his own La Vida . The time is surely right, then, to drop his first commercially available mix CD. As you’d expect, it’s firmly rooted in soul, effortlessly joining the dots between disco-funk, jazz, slow jams, global beats and summery Latin flavas. Opening with the Universal Robot Band’s impeccable “Dance and Shake Your Tambourine”, Culture Shock sits somewhere between a particularly good radio show and a dancefloor-bating mix-up, making it perfect for home listening. It also includes Gilberto Gil’s disco era samba classic “Toda Menina Baiana”, which is never a bad thing.

Zip – Fabric 67 [FABRIC133]

ZIP/VARIOUS - Fabric 67

Thomas Franzmann has long been a dark horse of underground club music. Though he keeps a lower profile than some of his peers, his contributions to esoteric house and techno over the past decade plus have made him a cult favorite. As one of the founders of Perlon, he released much of minimal and microhouse’s creme de la creme. He also happens to be an exceptional DJ, especially when the situation calls for the deeper and weirder side of things. In the club, Zip is known for lacing his sets with unreleased or never-to-be-released tracks that keep trainspotters on their toes. He takes a different tack with fabric 67, sticking mostly to records that aren’t so hard to get your hands on (curiously enough, there’s only one Perlon track). “I did the mix with two record players, two CD players and my favourite mixer. I was alone in my studio and it felt just like it did when I was doing a mixtape ages ago,” Franzmann says of the mix. “Only this one comes with slightly more pressure [laughs]…” [RA]

Gerd Janson – Music For Autobahns [RH125]

https://imagescdn.juno.co.uk/300/CS475372-01A-MED.jpg

Gerd Janson compiles an exciting ambient-not-ambient compilation that includes exclusive tracks by Âme, Move D, Quiet Village Marco Passarani, Roman Flügel and Tom Trago. “Music for Autobahns” is the result of asking Gerd Janson for a collection that starts where previous efforts left off. While Computer Incarnations for World Peace (his compilations for Sonar Kollektiv) concentrated on tipsy new wave music done by jazz-funkers or neo disco-ists, Autobahns has an
unintentionally strong leaning towards ambient not-ambient, kraut pleasers and codeine house, i.e. Industrial Ambient and Electrifying New Age. It’s all new and exclusive material by people who once or twice crossed paths with the compiler. You will hear Âme with their modular slambient concept sitting next to Amsterdam’s Tom Trago off peak time duties, Roman Flügel with an old DAT tape wunderkind that shares a side with Heidelberg’s very own Move D in love, outsider dance from CF & Daywalker alias Entro Senestre and Willie Burns as well as a greasy sounding Marco Passarani and finally Tensnake’s romantic pop appeal that is a counterpoint to Maxxi & Zeus (better known as Quiet Village) and their “Passion” for all beauties that lie beyond.

Norman Nodge – Berghain 06 [OSTGUTCD23]

Cover art - Various Artists: Berghain 06

Berghain resident Norman Nodge presents the sixth installment in the club’s mix series. Since 2005 Norman has played the Berghain floor once a month and has become an integral part of the Berghain crew. He knows how to create a journey and so it’s not surprising that his Mix for Ostgut Ton is also built from many different elements. Classic Tracks like Jeff Mills? “Keeping Of The Kept” feature alongside the work of younger producers like Patrick Gräser. His “From Foreign Territories” is one of three exclusive unreleased tracks on this mix. Nodge also remembers that established artists like Keith Tenniswood as Radioactive Man are still producing powerful music today and includes a few recent tracks from such well established names. Showing that his palette of taste goes far beyond what you might expect to be the typical Berghain sound, much lighter tracks like Legowelt’s remix of the incredible “Rainy Day Juno Jam” by Xosar are also included. With probably the most varied tracklisting for a Berghain Mix CD yet, Norman Nodge is convincing us with his courage to try new combinations.

Berghain mainstay Ben Klock will be in charge for the next installment of Fabric’s ongoing mix series. Taking on this project for Ben has become more than just the mix itself; it’s been an adventure into the future sound of some of the best and most exciting producers out there. Recorded in his home studio in Berlin, the mix has a distinct intention; one of discovery. The selection reflects both his love of classic house and techno productions as well as his passion for unearthing new and unreleased music as his friends were personally invited to submit rare and exclusive tracks for the purposes of this very special fabric mix. Klock had this to say when asked about producing the mix, “I didn’t want to include any of my ‘hits’ from my sets this time. The idea is more that you have something to discover when you listen.”

More from the Roller Disco reissue series, as Intergalactic Gary’s tongue-in-cheek tribute to the joys of camp ’80s synthesizer music gets a deserved repress. For the uninitiated, Intergalactic Gary is a Hague-based synth fetishist and notorist Italo digger. Here, he showcases a tiny fraction of his unrivalled collection of (largely European) synth-pop and disco oddities, mixing up 19 tracks that will be new to all but the most dusty-fingered of collectors.

VA – Jerome Derradji Presents – 122 BPM – The Birth Of House Music [STILLMDCD006]

Stunning triple disc compilation and includes numerous unreleased tracks and beyond hard to find house tracks made in Chicago in the early to late Eighties from the catalogues of Mitchbal Records and Chicago Connection Records. 3CD boxset includes an exclusive mix by Jerome Derradji, and a 28 page booklet documenting the story of Mitchbal and Chicago Connection Records.

For anyone with an interest in the history of house music, this excellent compilation from Jerome Derradji’s Still Music imprint should be essential listening. It focuses on the output of two long forgotten Chicago labels, Mitchbal and Chicago Connection Records, during the early to mid 1980s, when electro, new wave and boogie were morphing into house. As such, 122 BPM offers a mix of rare, largely overlooked cuts that bristle with analogue dancefloor intent. There’s proto-jack in the shape of Jeanette Thomas’s “Shake Your Body” and Z Factor’s “I Am The DJ”, dubbed-out Chi-town proto house from Mitchbal and Larry Williams, and some terrific bodypoppin’ electro from McGhee.

Levon Vincent – Fabric 63 [FABRIC125]

Track artwork

Given his meteoric rise over the last two years, it’s perhaps no surprise to find New York-based techno star Levon Vincent behind the decks on this latest Fabric mix. His mixing and production style – dubby, fluid and loose, but prone to periods of paranoid darkness and intense moments of sun-bright clarity – is tailor-made for an album like this. As a result, Fabric 63 is a memorable journey that touches on all of these traits, from the spine tingling, dubwise deepness of his own “The End” and apocalyptic “Early Reflections”, to the elastic, melody-driven rubberyness of Joey Anderson, reflective groovery of Jus-Ed and growling menace of Anthony Parasole.
