VA – Dutch Wave: A History Of Minimal Synth & Cold Wave In The Netherlands [OS036]

First chapter on Onderstroom digging into the history of Dutch minimal synth & wave. Comes in a gatefold sleeve with metallic finishing and pressed on 180gr. vinyl. Who needs a big, expensive recording studio with all those fancy high-tech machines that only make your weary head spin when you can do it all by yourself at home in your (teenage) bedroom? Way back in the early eighties all you really needed was an idea, quite a bit of guts and some rudimentary equipment. You could basically do whatever you wanted. The means were limited, yet the sky was unbounded. It was the time of the cold war nuclear threat, social unrest and mass unemployment but at the same time it was an era of infinite possibilities. The future was just around the corner. A lot of music that was being produced sounded just like that: a brave new world of sound and rhythm. Music was simply put on cheap cassettes, easily duplicated and swiftly distributed in limited quantities into the big world outside.

VA – Kale Plankieren: Dutch Cassette Rarities 1981 – 1985 Vol. 1 [KH009]

VARIOUS - Kale Plankieren: Dutch Cassette Rarities 1981-1985 Volume 1

Featuring a wide range of artists (Das Ding, Plus Instruments, De Fabriek for a start!) from the Amsterdam Fetisj scene and cities such as Rotterdam, Utrecht, The Hague, and Zwolle. It gives a glimpse into the artistic DIY music movement that was growing extensively outside of mainstream circles. The beautifully printed record sleeve was designed by Steele Bonus. It includes liner notes (in English and Dutch) that paint a great picture of the context where these bands and artists lived and breathed. It is compiled by Mark van de Maat and mastered by Rude 66.

Das Ding – Industrial Universal [PNKMN18]

Das Ding, the dutch wave savant, arrives on Pinkman with four works of full bodied synth sorrow. Freezing rain pelts rusting machinery, a barren land of decay stretches out onto dancefloors. Rasping rhythms and lumbering bass buttress bitter chords and grinding notes that compel bodies to move. And within the dereliction, behind the dilapidation and rot, burns a purity of expression that is emblematic of Danny Bosten’s consistent quality.

DAS DING/ANTONI MAIOVVI/HYBOID/ANBAU/SYNTH ALIEN - Essere EP

The debut release of Aspecto Humano, label based in Barcelona, is being presented as a sampler composed of five tracks, which clearly shows the label’s preferences and what to be found in the future. The first track is the new version of Das Ding’s classic ‘H.S.T.A.’, a jewel that has not been pressed on vinyl to date. Follows ‘Extraterrestrial Biological Entity’, a killer track made by master of horror Antoni Maiovvi, and finish the side Hyboid with his well known synthwave ‘Telepath or Psycopath’. On the other side the debut of part of Aspecto Humano founders, Anbau, with their kraftwerkian ‘Disco Z’. Ends the reference Synth Alien, one of the most reputated spanish artists at the moment, focused to burn the dancefloor with his ‘Bailarina Automatica’.

Das Ding – Missing Tapes [MW061]

DAS DING - Missing Tapes

Minimal Wave presents an album of long lost tracks by Dutch electronic music pioneer Das Ding, entitled “Missing Tapes”. Danny Bosten formed Das Ding as a solo project in the early 1980s and released his music and friends’ music via his own cassette label called Tear Apart Tapes. At the time, he was studying graphic design at art school, and in turn he ended up designing the artwork, cassette-sleeves and illustrations for the label himself. Meanwhile, he recorded his own music as Das Ding. Powerful dark electro, he made several addictive and danceable tracks which later become Minimal Wave hits. Danny made all his music in his bedroom which essentially turned into a small recording studio. He went on to release many of his own tapes and also played some live gigs. Old tapes were uncovered around 2010, and Minimal Wave released a remastered version of “H.S.T.A.” and select other tracks. A wave of renewed interest followed the record’s release and soon people were in touch to propose live shows. Twenty years later, and after some deliberation, Das Ding was reincarnated under its old moniker but now with a revised line-up and a working set-up that reflected inevitable technological change. Recently, Danny came across further tape archives from those early days. And from the batch, we selected our favorites to present to you in vinyl release form.

VA – World Of Rubber 2 [RUBBER002]

The Rubber label may proudly hail from the iconic Lowlands area known as Den Haag, yet their sphere of influence clearly stretches much further. First up is secret Amsterdam weapon Robert Bergman, laying down some deviant acid box action in the shape of “Broadcast From Ceres” which dovetails nicely with the more psychedelic overtones of “Masquerading As Stars” from Brussels-based duo Tav Exotic. The master Das Ding opens the B-side with the subaqueous “Divebomb” whilst the unheralded Safe Swim plunges into the deep end of experimentation on “Pictures Of Skies”. It’s left to Diagonal pair Bronze Teeth to wrap up matters with the rip snorting squat party techno of “Easygroove” which was clearly produced with The Hague in mind.

Das Ding – Why Is My Life So Boring? LP [EE001RTM]

Debut release for Electronic Emergencies hailing from Rotterdam. They present their first release, a new album of Dutch cold wave legend Das Ding: Why Is My Life So Boring? It’s a brand new 10-track album, which sounds crisp and young in the club and mature when you play it at home. Das Ding has always had that certain thing; strict and detached beats combined with warm melancholic melodies, emotionally distant and intense at the same time. The sound is clearly analogue and very specific since Danny Bosten rebuilds his vintage synths and builds his own sequencers and modular systems.

Das Ding – Triffid Farm [SEJA008]

Rotterdam based Danny Bosten a.k.a. Das Ding has long been active in the scene, but was operating under the radar for some time. Both side A and the B side ”We Can Rebuild Him ‘, are popping in immediately. Das Ding is aiming at two goals: being impressive, both on the dance floor as in the intimacy of the living room.

Das Ding – Sequencer [DHF002]

Danny Bosten is back with brand new material as his Das Ding pseudo. Don’t expect this guy to ruminate on his eighties material though. This is about moving forward. ‘Sequencer’ contains four stoned, late night, modular synth explorations. With a far out, heavy dub feel for ”space”, this tape will find fans of Aphex Twins’ SAW 85-92, drooling all over it.

VARIOUS - Minimal Wave Tapes Volume Two

This is the second volume of The Minimal Wave Tapes series, a collection of rare electronic music compiled from bands around the world.  Most of the songs were recorded in the 1980s and originally released on limited edition cassettes or vinyl by the artists themselves, and only a handful of people knew about them.  Now they’ve been remastered from their analog source tapes, brought to you by Veronica Vasicka and Peanut Butter Wolf.

LES YEUX INTERDITS/DAS DING/LAB 80 - The Tear Apart Tapes (Front Cover)

Out of the 3 songs on this release, 2 were originally released on cassette in the 80’s by Danny Bosten of Das Ding via his own Tear Apart Tapes label. The other one (LAB 80) was a collaboration he did with his brother and has remained unreleased until now. This release was pressed in conjunction with PopWave301 to celebrate Das Ding’s live set at OT301 in Amsterdam on October 21, 2010.
