Delano Smith – It’s Not Over [MM17]

Chicago born, Detroit-raised Delano Smith is one of the foundational artists of the contemporary house scenes. In 2023, he revealed he was suffering with a rare form of cancer but as this new EP title suggests, he is still here and still crafting high-grade sounds. ‘When I Was Young’ kicks off with his signature smoky drum loops and train travel sense of hypnosis. ‘The Rush’ is another heads down jam, this time marbled with eerie pads and wet clicks and claps that oil the groove while ‘Rewired’ shuts down with real late night delicacy and evocative minimalism.

XDB – Chicago At Midnight [PRTR28]

Goettingen’s long standing dub techno servant XDB takes us to Chicago At Midnight with this new 12″ on Pariter. ‘Fenders’ is one and is a deliciously elastic rhythm with rolling kick drums setting a hypnotic groove as the bubbly synths rise up through the mix. ‘Cagomi’, more edgy and amped up with gritty hits and swaying bass, gets a new lease of life after first surfacing on XDB’s Metrolux Music back in 2009. The same cut gets a remix from Delano Smith that’s more rooted to the floor in the Detroit man’s usual textbook style.

Delano Smith / Norm Talley – Straight Up No Chaser [UAR015]

Norm Talley returns to his Upstairs Asylum label alongside fellow US house pioneer Delano Smith for Straight Up No Chaser, an eight-track opus featuring four solo cuts each. Talley’s gritty, dubbed-out, low-rolling house style is present and correct throughout with the loopy chords of ‘Blak Bottom’ getting things going, ‘The Flip’ getting more cavernous and aqueous and ‘ISO Vision’ leaning into dub techno. ‘Believe It’ is a soulful deep house looper, while Smith gets bubbly with ‘The Bassline’, lays down thumping kicks on ‘Travels 23’ and his trademark synth smears on ‘The Drive’ while ‘Remembrance’ is a heady dub house cut that locks you into a state of perfect hypnosis.

Gigi Galaxy – Interview With An Alien [DET313E]

A hard to find sci-fi Detroit techno classic gets a timely reissue complete with a new, super solid Delano Smith remix. It’s hard not to love the original in all its futuristic glory, led by a sturdy four-to-the-floor pummelling but boasting a throbbing neo-disco bassline – imagine a lost Gorgio Moroder classic being remade by Jeff Mills in PurposeMaker mode. But the Delano Smith remix updates it for modern palates, ironically by delving back even further, to the early 70s model Kraftwerk from whom he borrows some very austere but classy synth sounds and a touch of electro syncopation.

Norm Talley / Michael Zucker – South by Midwest [FS001K]

Owner operator of Finale Sessions Music Michael Zucker has brought you a sister label called Finale Sessions Music to showcase his own music with close friends and family. The first release it’s starting with the Detroit veteran Norm Talley and label boss Michael Zucker. Norm Talley track called “Power “it has the sublime Detroit deep sound with its sharp chords and that pumping deep kick and claps and it also has additional work from another Detroit legend Delano Smith but what makes this track is the fantastic vocals from the soul. Track two “Lock Jaw” is just raw beatdown late night track with deep chicago classic sound with a pumping kicks and mind altering synth. Then next is Michael Zuckers first track “Parisian Nights” with it’s classic filtered classic chicago sound with proper pads and chords with a vocal drifting in and out of the spectrum . Track two “ Thought Process” is just an amazing deep inspired melodic trip with key’s and that classic b4 organ that sets the tone for the pads and that lifted filtered sound.

Delano Smith – A Tale Of Two Cities [C4RMK]

Two strong remixes for Delano Smith. Efdemin and Tobias are on the case. Efdemin drops an epic building Detroit techno flavoured bomb and Tobias take is equally strong but slightly more trippy and hypnotic.

Delano Smith – Precipice EP [MM011]

The label boss’s return to his own Mixmode sees him explore earthy house rather than the streamlined beaters that made Odyssey such a smash. Precipice EP has three hypnotic tracks of organic Motor City textures and rhythms. Mariana’s Song builds with the strong fluid motion omnipresent in all Smith’s productions. Mechanical drums drive a rugged analogue bass line, while flowing pads are layered to create a bright soundscape. The track is one to captivate the floor, building effortlessly to lock it into step. Set over a tight locomotive groove, Delano’s talent for twisting up vocal samples creates a smokey, atmosphere on Celebration. Toughening the drums and easing in the bottom end, choice drum fills heighten the impact of the beautifully swung drums. The dusty beats on Dream Come True bounce with a wide eyed rawness. At once fragile and assertive, the soft chords are reclined above a gently insistent bass line to give the floor or the home stereo a comfortable ride. Able to focus the output of his own label on the kind of tracks that first saw him emerge, Delano has built a bridge to introduce new ears to the sound of his city.

Delano Smith – Light Shades Of Detroit [SUSHP0136]

Cover art - Delano Smith: Light Shades Of Detroit

Delano Smith was suitably impressive on the recent ‘Dark Shades Of Detroit’ EP. He’s just bettered that with the ‘Light Shades Of Detroit’ EP on Sushitech’s sister Purple offshoot… Three tracks of heads-down, quality deep & dark house music from Delano.
