VA – Finale Underground Vol.2 – Detroit Visionaries [FU002]

For those turned on by the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired sounds of Detroit deep house and techno, this EP from Michael Zucker’s Finale Underground imprint (an offshoot of his Finale Sessions label) should be an essential purchase. With the likes of Patrice Scott, Keith Worthy and Luke Hess involved, you’d expect the quality threshold to be high. It is, of course, resulting in a quartet of killer tracks. Worthy’s hypnotic techno jam “Tolox” is a definite highlight, though it pales in comparison to the analogue futurism of Luke Hess’s brilliant “Cyclops”. Best of all, though, is Scott’s “Journey Into The Unknown”, which bobs, weaves, bubbles and spits to the rush-inducing deep house sound of undulating synthesizer melodies and classic, Transmat-style Motor City rhythms.

youAND:THEMACHINES – Behind Reshaped [ORN029LTDW]

YOUAND THEMACHINES - Behind Reshaped

youAND:THEMACHINES is the solo moniker of Martin Müller, one half of the Berlin based luminaries youANDme. A year after the release of his ‘Behind’ LP youAND:THEMACHINES presents ‘Behind’ LP Reshaped – an opulent collection of selected edits, interpretations and remixes courtesy of a prestigious roster of distinguished producers including Matthew Herbert, Steve Bug, XDB, Boo Williams, Sascha Dive, Legowelt, Marko Fürstenberg & Luke Hess and Basic Soul Unit amongst many more. ‘Behind Reshaped’ mines deep beneath the original’s surface and is a varied compound of textures, tones and atmospheres. From Steve Bug’s glacial ‘Raw and Reduced’ edit of ‘Drift’ to The Analog Roland Orchestra’s allaying take on ‘Desire’ and from XDB’s armoured and clap-heavy remix of Perception to Freund der Familie’s lucidly textural version of ‘Entrance Room’ the listener is ferried through a broad spectrum of feeling whilst a spectral and rueful current remains consistent.

VA – Belly Dancer [MT037]

DJ 3000 presents 10 Years of Motech (The Remixes) Part 2 EP ahead of the full length remix CD. Mark Broom adds a killer interpretation for an impressive opener. Next up is Kiko who doesn’t disappoint with his driving new rendition of DJ 3000s Defiant (MT-015), toughening up the original but still maintaining its funk-fuelled roots. The rest of the EP features a remix a track taken from Franki Juncas 2011 album Invisible Moods. Firstly, Ill Be Around gets the remix treatment from Detroits Luke Hess, delivers a moodier take on things, with deep pads and a grooving beat.

Arthur Oskan – Wants & Needs EP [BMG009]

Convective Deep Techno currents from Arthur Oskan, backed with a Luke Hess remix. On the original ‘Wants & Needs’ Arthur seduces with melancholy, dark-eyed synth pads and a purring bassline, stealthily evolving into a real midnight groover. On the flip, Luke Hess reduces the elements to a shook-down Dub Tech-House roller with strong Detroit genes.

Luke Hess feat. Omar S – Michigan Central Station EP [ECHOCORDCOLOUR012]

Michigan Central Station built in 1913 for the Michigan Central Railroad, was Detroit, Michigan’s passenger rail depot from its opening in 1913 until the discontinuance of Amtrak service on January 6, 1988. At the time of its construction, it was the tallest rail station in the world. The building, located in the Corktown district of Detroit still stands today, though it remains unoccupied. Restoration projects and plans have gone as far as the negotiation process, but none have come to fruition. Spread throughout the city of Detroit and its surrounding metropolitan area, the decay of once magnificent buildings during the industrial revolution and automobile era now cast a shadow of despair on a once flourishing city. These monuments of achievement now lay barren and forsaken by city government. Infrastructural restoration and city development are fundamental elements in Detroit’s recovery, and the recovery of cities worldwide. It is time for revival in our cities, but first, in our souls. The Michigan Central Station EP is a platform for this change.
