Abstract Division – Time and Perception Pt.1 [DREF016]

ABSTRACT DIVISION - Time & Perception Part 1

Paul Boex’s Dynamic Reflection imprint is continually growing in calibre with each release. Time & Perception Part 1 is the labels 16th title and fifth for Abstract Division, a collab between Boex and Dave Miller. The EP opens with “Fierce Tension”, which sees the duo bury their siren-sounding synths into a condensed wall of sinister force, while Shifted’s booming and reverb heavy remix annihilates much of the originals musicality, it unrelentingly bores a war path of linear techno championed by the likes of DVS1. On the flip, “Comprehend” is like being caught in a wind storm of flying bolts, rust and ripped roofing, while the EPs ambient track “Collision” squeaks and gurgles like a alien trapped at the bottom cave in a Ridley Scott film.

Covered In Sand – Heaven’s Gate Suicides [MIRA003]

Shifted unveils yet another cloaked figure with his Covered in Sand project, the first release on the Avian sub-label Mira following two impressive turns from the mysterious Bleaching Agent. The title track to Heavens Gates Suicides is saturated in overdrive with cloudy Regis and BMB influences evident. Vatican Shadow remixes “Heavens Gates Suicides” adding subtle musicality to his version, almost throwing the track out of sync with it’s awkward snare hits – if you can call them that. “Russian Gold & Blood Diamonds” is like a beatless Severed Heads piece pulling desperately at your heartstrings while “Pale Skin” is another electronically shambled scuzz of hollowed hisses and jittery sound design.

Shifted – The Cold Light (Part 1/2) [AVN008]

Expert attention to detail across all visual and sonic elements is present and correct once again on this sick new release from the Avian nest, with the label opting for a cardboard sleeve this time. Label co-founder Shifted is at the helm, presenting the first of a two part Cold Light series; “Cold Light Sektor A” is all about the contrast between elements as the near incandescent lightness of those dubby chords battles with the growing weight of Shifted’s sludgy rhythmic arrangements. Complementing this, “Sektor B” opts to burrow down a plinking locked groove making it a perfect DJ tool.

Shifted – Sickness By Means Of Clairvoyance [OCS005]

Cover art - Shifted: Sickness By Means Of Clairvoyance

Shifted makes a welcome return to Our Circular Sound. The four tracks EP don’t deviate from the established Our Circular Sound template, at times channeling the same intensity and single minded “heads down” momentum that ran through much of Crossed Paths, Shifted’s debut LP for Mote Evolver. “Chapter” sets the grainy tone, locked grooving from the off yet slowly introducing extra rhythmic wallop and minute textural details that keep its head well above mere DJ tool. “Feeding” provides some brief yet ominous respite before launching straight into late 90s Downwards functionalism of “Aun Weor” and “Unveiled”.

Developer & Stavislav Tolkachev – Part Two [MODULARZ008.2]

Cover art - Developer & Stavislav Tolkachev: Part Two

The second installment in Developer’s July emissions. “Dirty Drive” sees Developer stretching to work a melody into his machinery, coming out with a metallic dub chord drowning in its own echo, while “Dirty Drive 2” adds some complexity to the musicality and creates an utterly engrossing hook in the process. Shifted’s remix keeps a careful distance between the clean beat and the murky textures of the dubby elements, but for a real lesson in refined techno composition head straight to Stanislav Tokachev’s “Building Peaks”. Simplicity doesn’t come more captivating than that synth line.

Planetary Assault Systems – Function 4 Remixes Episode 2 [MOTE030]

Mote Evolver return with another salvo of reworks from Planetary Assault Systems’ seminal record ‘Function 4’, originally released on the influential Peacefrog label in 2000. Marcel Dettmann returns with a “Base dub” remix which is a more stripped back affair than his more full bodied first attempt, concentrating instead on subtle rhythmic nuances. Lucy provides two remixes – one utilising a minimal breakbeat over shrill pads, and one that piles on the atmosphere with its swathes of reverb. And Shifted rounds it up with his slickly executed revision, with a rolling rhythm that’s packed densely around abstract tones.

Shifted – Crossed Paths [MOTECD01]

Shifted’s ‘Crossed Paths’ is a record which pushes the formal possibilities of techno and is the first full length work to be released on Mote-Evolver. On ‘Crossed Paths’ the breadth of Shifted’s ideas is both subtle and devastating. As a producer Shifted’s methodology is like that of a sculptor, he works principally with textures knowing precisely when to leave edges raw and fault lines exposed. ‘Crossed Paths’ is constructed of 11 ominous cuts carved with precision and poise.

Shifted / Samuli Kemppi – Parallel Series 2 [MOTE028]

Having become something of a regular fixture in the Mote Evolver camp, Shifted is back once again to head up Side A of the second Parallel Series 12″. As you might expect, the techno comes bleak and throbbing from the Shifty one, although avoiding excessive heaviness over immersive progression and dubby FX. On the flip Samuli Kemppi plies his quirkier trade, using offbeat synth mess to counteract the steady rhythm of the bottom end on “Trans Neptunian”. “Detached Object” meanwhile fires off streams of interlocking sounds which spiral around the relentless kick for a classy exercise in techno restraint.

Dax J & Chris Stanford – Programm EP [ETG001]

EarToGround presents their first label release. Out of London comes the Programm EP with original sounds written and produced by Dax J & Chris Stanford. With their strong influences of traditional techno they have brought it’s rawest stripped back elements to life. A mechanism of deep synthesizer stabs, a hard but sweet kick drum and complementary hi-percussion & shakers setting a solid platform for this new born label. On the flip side, EarToGround welcomes remixes Shifted and Truss.

Max_M – The Kidnapper Bell [MRECLTD009]

MAX M - The Kidnapper Bell (Front Cover)

Max_M with an original on his own M_Rec LTD, a journey with a very deep sound, something that comes from his background, a walk through Detroit, Birmingham and Berlin. A rhythm that is not heavy, repetitive riff that nullifies any inhibitions. It’s definitely evil, it’s a reminder of the deep and pure techno. Remixes by Shifted and Ascion.
