Ø [Phase] – Remixed [TOKEN040]

Arguably the two biggest R’s in techno at the moment remix [Phase], with Rodhad revealing a more emotive side to his techno, while Robert Hood delivers the goods like only he can. Rodhad’s interpretation takes away some of the original low-end heard in “Perplexed”, resulting in something that’s groovy, but still tough, while noticeable increasing the blue-noted tones of the track. Robert Hood’s love affair with “Dirto II” continues with the Detroit legend joining in on the cold temperaments for a clinical and percussively slicing remix. With rapid fire 12″s like this, it seems trying to match Token’s dominance of club techno at the moment would be a futile act.

Now here it comes the serious business. Because there are so many good albums and different genders, I took the same approach as in the 2012’s review.

The list is covering all the genders that I like and post on The Hipodrome Of Music, so I came up with no more than 20 gender lists, going from house to techno, disco and funk to electro and new wave …

Here we go.

Token brings the 2nd single, from the debut album ‘Frames Of Reference’ by Ø [Phase]. ‘Dirtro II’ is definitely one of the standout cuts of the album and shows Ø [Phase] in his darkest and deepest mood. On the b-side he is joined by one of his biggest inspirations & one of techno’s most legendary innovators: Robert Hood. The result is a carefully executed yet explosive peak time cut.

Following on from his Floorplan album and November’s Floorplan EP, Robert Hood returns with a new double header on M-Plant, to close 2013. He delivers these two new cuts of pulsating, body-moving Techno with that classic, deep and minimal Hood sound. He builds ‘Eleven’ and ‘Alarm’, layer upon layer, gradually drawing all the elements together, until they become a penetrating attack on the senses.

MPM17 comprises two brand new Floorplan tracks, Phobia and Glory B plus a remix of album cut ‘Higher!’ by Ben Sims. The opener, ‘Phobia’ is a driving, funk-fuelled track. An unrelenting looped jam that immediately sets the tone for another stunning M-Plant release. Solid peak time techno tracks.

Turbo Warehouse Series continue with Gingy & Bordello, backed by a killer remix from Robert Hood. Saturday Night Fervor silkily wraps itself around wiggly disco-inflected samples that guarantee hand raising and foot stomping in equal measure. This is the kind of fun, soulful, inclusive party bomb that makes the world go round.

Floorplan aka Robert Hood – Paradise [MPM16LP]

Paradise sees minimal Detroit techno icon Robert Hood exploring the Floorplan concept in more expansive style. The Floorplan project was founded in the mid 90s, as Hood looked to merge his minimalist approach with elements of house, disco, funk and gospel. Explored intermittently over a six year period, Hood put it to one side and it was a reissue of the Floorplan debut by Rush Hour that inspired him to revisit the project in 2011, scoring a bonafide gem in “We Magnify His Name”. Explored in album format here, Paradise is a mixture of all new material and tracks culled from these recent M Plant 12″ releases, lending the album a sense of continuity. It’s all the more impressive when you consider the fact Hood’s been releasing one highly conceptual album a year since 2009.

Contakt – Nobody Else [IH004]

The latest offering from San Francisco’s Icee Hot label finds the young imprint officially welcoming another artist to its gradually expanding roster, the Michigan-reared, New York-based producerContakt. Particularly on “Nobody Else,” Contakt’s flair for big-room melody remains intact, but he takes notes from classic KMS, filling out the song’s cresting synths with a full-bodied bassline, a hooky vocal sample and a sturdy rhythmic underpinning. “Tessera 04” goes deeper, channeling Maurizio while delving headlong into a dense cloud of synths and maintaining a steady sense of forward momentum. Remixes by Ghosts on Tape and Robert Hood.

Carl Taylor – Debbie’s Groove [EPM002V]

https://imagescdn.juno.co.uk/300/CS478780-01A-MED.jpg

Debbie’s Groove sees Carl Taylor in full on jacking mode, with tinges of disco and a stomping beat that will see you heading straight for the nearest dancefloor. Robert Hood turns his hand to Debbie’s Groove adding that magic touch, with a deep bassline, funky claps and a vocal snippet that echoes his Floorplan sound alongside the tougher tech workouts we’re used to hearing from this master technician. Good Vibrations gives us a deeper blend of the house meets techno sound that Carl has become known for, with its tough syncopated groove reaching dizzying heights.

Robert Hood – Motor: Nighttime World 3 [MMLP038]

After the legendary “Nighttime World Volume 1” and “Nighttime World Volume 2”, Robert Hood returns with the long awaited “Motor: Nighttime World 3” on Music Man. With this, Robert Hood returns to the project he first started on Austria’s Cheap label back in 1995 and subsequently continued in 2000 on M-Plant. Fusing his trademark minimal techno into jazz inspired moods and inflections, Hood emerges from the smoke-lit shadows of a downbeat, but not beaten, Motor City metropolis. Inspired by Julien Temple’s documentary ‘Requiem For Detroit?’ Robert Hood examines the life, history and future of Detroit’s motor industry and its workforce, set against a backdrop of decay, despair, hope and re-birth.
